Okwiri Becomes First Kenyan Boxer to Qualify For Rio

Kenya’s welterweight boxer, Rayton Okwiri, has become the first Kenyan boxer to qualify for 2016 Olympic Games. Okwiri qualified for the Games after beating Ghana’s Azumah Mohameed in the semi-finals of the welterweight category at Africa Olympic qualifiers in Yaoundé on Thursday to reach Saturday’s final where he also beat Walid Said of Egypt. BAK President, John Kameta, said Okwiri had done Kenya proud once more and offered his congratulations. The 2016 boxing calendar began in earnest this week with a selections event for Kenyan representatives to the Olympics Qualifiers - Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon later in the year. Kenya Targets All Africa Games Medal Haul as 2015 Calendar Gets Underway

Kenya plans to clinch as many medals as possible during the All African Games to be held in Congo Brazaville on September 4-12. The last time Kenya starred at the prestigious games was in 1987 at Kenyatta International Conference Centre when the country played host to the 4th All Africa Games.
