Okwiri, Gicharu, Abaka Get Olympic Qualifier Wildcards

The AIBA Pro-Boxing trio of middleweight Nickson Abaka, bantamweight Benson Gicharu and welterweight Rayton Okwiri have been handed direct slots to the Kenya team for the 2016 Rio Olympic qualifiers in Yaounde, officials said yesterday. What this means is that the three will not participate in the national trials which will be used to select the national team to Yaounde in Mombasa from January 21-23. KDF’s Abaka Heads to APB Debut in Istanbul

Kenya Defence Force’s middleweight boxer Nickson Abaka left the country for Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday where he will debut in the AIBA Pro Boxing ranks. Abaka, who is the captain of national boxing team ‘Hit Squad’, will fight Adem Kilicci from Turkey. Okwiri Sets Sights on APB Glory

Kenya’s Rayton Okwiri, who on Saturday caused a major upset when he knocked out fancied Austrian Marcos Nader with a devastating right hook in the second round of their six-round AIBA pro-boxing in Baku, Azerbaijan, returned home on Sunday night. Okwiri made his professional debut with a bang, shocking top-seeded welterweight Nader who had an impressive professional career record of 18-1-1.
