Nick Okoth Wins Gold in Brazzaville

Kenyan boxer Nick Okoth won a gold medal in Lightweight (60kg ) at the African Boxing Championships, after he beat Reda BENBAZIZ of Algeria 3-0 by unanimous decision in the final on Sunday June 25th . This brings the total of Kenya’s medals to five as follows:


1. Nick Okoth – Gold ( Lightweight )

2. John Kyalo – Bronze ( Middleweight )

3. Shaffi Bakari – Bronze ( Light Flyweight )

4. Elizabeth Akinyi – Bronze ( Women’s Middleweight )

5. Christine Ongare – Bronze ( Women’s Flyweight )


1. Nick Okoth advanced to the final after his semi-final opponent MOHAMED HAMOUT of MOROCCO withdrew due to injury.

2. Shaffi Bakari lost 3-2 on split decision to MATIAS HAMUNYELA of NAMIBIA in the Light Flyweight (46-49kg) Semis.

3. John Kyalo withdrew from the fight in the second round due to injury, against ABDIN HUSSEIN of Egypt in the Middleweight ( 75kg).

Okoth, Bakari and Kyalo also qualified for the Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships from August 25th – September 3rd in Hamburg, Germany.

The team will return in two groups. First, on Monday 6pm including Nick Okoth, and the second on Tuesday midnight.
